Chapter Seven

By that evening, I was back in Springfield, in an Airbnb that Bronkowski had rented for me. Liberty Falls – and the many small towns that surrounded it – were simply not big enough to hide out in. I needed the hustle and bustle of a city, and even though Springfield was hardly a metropolis, it still had close to a couple of hundred thousand people, which was about ten times the population of the town I had recently escaped.

I’d headed north first, abandoning the chief’s car in the town of Houston and stealing another, which I’d also driven north to Rolla, where I’d then taken I-44, as if headed for St. Louis. Another switch – and this time I made sure to hide the last stolen car as well as I could – and I had finally made the trip back the other way, heading southwest on the interstate all the way to Springfield. The car I’d driven there was now hidden away in the garage of the Airbnb, and I hoped it would be impossible for my route to be traced. I figured Fellows and his friends in law enforcement would figure I was in St. Louis, and concentrate their resources there. It would take them a long time to figure out where I’d actually gone, if they figured it out at all.

I’d bought a new burner cellphone on my travels, and had called both Georgia and Davis, telling them to get out of town. Georgia hadn’t been happy, as expected, but had agreed to do as I asked, for a short while at least. Davis had been less easy to convince, already annoyed about being in Springfield, away from what was happening in Liberty Falls. But I’d explained that if he was captured, then the cops could hold that over me, make it less likely for me to complete the job and find out what had happened to his wife. In the end, he had agreed, and Bronkowski had also sorted him out with an Airbnb, this one up in Kansas City. I’d also advised him to send his kids and parents somewhere else as well, until this whole thing was over. I’d seen what Fellows was capable of, and there was no point taking any chances.

Over takeout pizza, I took stock of what I had managed to bring with me. First – and most important – there was Kane. I wouldn’t have been able to bring myself to leave Liberty Falls without him, and his appearance in the parking lot had been a real blessing.

I also had my rucksack, which not only still had all my clothes in it, along with some more bladed weapons, but it also still had the two other sets of identity papers that had been stored in special compartments hidden in the lining. That was good, as the Mark Hopkins identity was finished.

I also had the chief’s Python, an AR-15 rifle – which turned out to be a Smith & Wesson M&P15 – as well as two other handguns, both Glock 22s chambered in .
